“The only things guaranteed to be here your entire
life are alcohol and sex.” – Mark Bursic, Sr.

That bit of wisdom was imparted to me by my father long ago as he considered purchasing a local bar. The bar never worked out, however in the spirit of my father’s wisdom (and since the internet has way more than enough sex) I see no reason not add a little more booze. And since 2005 that’s what we’ve done.

Every two weeks on Friday, of course, we post a new drink recipe. This gives you more than enough time to get to the store and buy ingredients before the weekend party. We try to spread around the love with different varieties of drinks including martinis, cordials, highballs, malted beverages and wines. We’ve even thrown in on a beer bread and chili recipe or two.

Thank you for visiting our site, feel free to poke around and see all the old recipes. And please subscribe to our RSS feed to get notification of new recipe postings. If you want more info about sending out your own mixer mails use the contact form to send us a message.

Jimmy Bomb

Where’s Jimmy Krenn? This is the question I keep hearing almost everywhere I go. Looks like the powers that be took him off the air at DVE, but no one knows why. They did the same thing to Randy a couple years back, but he came back on the air. From what I’ve read they don’t want Jimmy back. DON’T WANT JIMMY BACK?!? Are they crazy? Krenn is a Pittsburgh institution and the best thing on the radio. You know what the song says, “You just go and lay your hand on a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, and I think you’re gonna finally understand.”

Classic Eggnog

There was a wonderful article in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette about the history of Eggnog. Here is a little quote: “George Washington loved the stuff and, around the holidays, served grand bowls of eggnog in the presidential mansion. He had a fondness for hard liquor, and in fact, a few years before the first president died, he even got into the whiskey-making business. Which is ironic, considering that as president, he put down the Whiskey Rebellion.”

They have three wonderful, yet complicated recipes for the holiday favorite. I suggest you try at least one of them and then feel free to try my recipe.

Simple Eggnog

2 oz Rum
Deans Eggnog drink
Nutmeg

Fill a rocks glass with ice, add Rum and Nog. Mix, and sprinkle nutmeg on top of drink.

Mike and the Hammer

I was introduced to this drink at the Whiskey and Spirits festival this year. Let me just say that there were a LOT of good drinks flying around at this event. This one caught my attention because it has ginger beer in it. I have suggested a couple of drinks with this ingredient before and it’s worth extra time it takes to find it. This drink has a nice balance to it and would satisfy a large variety of guests.

The original recipe calls for a particular brand of whiskey and fruit liquor, and I have listed them below. The liquor might be hard to find in the PA Wine and Spirit store. So If you want to substitute I’d use Apricot Bandy. I had the drink with the single malt version of the whiskey. That seems a bit pricey for a mixed drink, but if you’ll drink it other ways as well it would be worth it. Use your best judgement here.

Mike and the Hammer

2 Parts Michael Collins 10 Year Old Whiskey
3/4 Part Marie Brizard Apry
3/4 Part Lemon Juice
1 Part Ginger Beer

Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice except ginger beer. Shake well and strain into rocks glass with fresh ice. Top off with ginger beer and garnish with lemon wedge.

Lime in the Coconut

I can’t stop singing this song since I made this drink. Which reminds me, I love the Muppets and can’t wait for the new movie. Anyway I grabbed a bottle of coconut vodka at the store the other day because it was on special. I had no idea what I was going to do with it, probably mix it with 7up or squirt.

Then I thought of the song and I experimented with different amounts of lime juice and coconut vodka. And I think I found the correct ratio that will cure your belly ache and avoid that call the doctor. You can also use coconut milk and rum for a more authentic drink. But I found the vodka to be very light and simple.

3 oz UV Coconut Vodka
Juice from 1/2 Lime

In a rocks glass filled with ice pour three oz of coconut vodka. Cut a lime into quarters. squeeze two quarters of lime into the drink and drop used quarters into the glass.

Nied’s Punch

This drink is a refreshing summer drink that really goes down smooth. I created this drink, a modified version of my Corvette for my good friend Jimmy Nied. He wanted a summertime drink that he could make up ahead of time and serve outside at his ‘acoustically perfect’ Amphitheater at Nied’s Hotel.

The punch comes from Orange Vodka, which is really the heart of the drink. Don’t try to make the drink with regular vodka and add an orange liquor, the drink becomes too syrupy and heavy. The crispness of the citrus and the cranberry help to give the drink the refreshing quality that you need on a hot summer day. You can experiment with other cranberry blends, but be careful that you don’t make the drink to sweet. The balance of sweet and tart is important for this drink.

Nied’s Punch

1.5 oz Orange Vodka
1 oz Sours Mix
Cranberry Juice
Lime Juice

Fill a rocks glass with ice add vodka, sours and cranberry juice. Stir top with a splash of lime juice and garnish with a lime wedge.
